In 2012, Ray joined Google as Director of Engineering to focus on projects related to machine learning and language processing.
Ray’s book offers a fascinating exploration of how human thought works and how we can replicate it in artificial intelligence. Written in 2012, the book presents Kurzweil’s Pattern Recognition Theory of Mind (PRTM), suggesting that our brains function through hierarchical pattern recognition.
What gets me is how much of Kurzweil’s thinking still feels relevant today in 2024. His insights laid a foundation that aligns with many of the advancements we’re now seeing in machine learning and neural networks.
Kurzweil’s ideas have aged gracefully, and he has written a new book this year which I just started reading. Many of his predictions about AI’s role in augmenting human abilities are materializing, and it’s exciting to witness the technology he envisioned becoming reality. This is what I have been giving talks about within the last 5 months!
The book captures the early momentum of AI research that has since evolved into large language models, cognitive computing, and even the first steps toward brain-computer interfaces. I should have an episode coming up about that by year’s end. I highly recommend giving this book a read or a listen.
